Discover California's Most Family-Friendly Beaches

Dec. 4, 2018

Forget about the winter blues and visit California this holiday season! Check out this list of family-friendly beaches across the Golden State.

Arroyo Burro Beach, Santa Barbara

This picturesque beach, also known as Hendry’s Beach, is perfect for families and children. Besides the safe swimming, beginner surfing and a chance to cast a line, this beach also features surrounding trails to explore. There’s also the Watershed Resource Center with educational programs for kids to learn about the importance of protecting California’s beaches and shoreline.

East Beach & Stearns Wharf, Santa Barbara

East Beach is a great spot for families as the sand is soft and inviting and the waves are gentle enough for the little ones. It’s right by Stearns Wharf, which is Santa Barbara’s most visited landmark. There are tons of shops for the kids to roam around in and find fun little trinkets. You’ll see fisherman dropping off their daily catches at the harbour, so you’ll definitely want to treat your family to a round of authentic fish-and-chips. For those looking for adventure, you can also rent bikes, paddleboards, and kayaks.

Coronado Beach, San Diego

For small-town charm, and the appealing island community of Coronado, Coronado Beach (also known as Central Beach) is the perfect getaway for families. This beautiful beach is set against the backdrop of the iconic Hotel del Coronado, and many would argue that this beach is a must-do when visiting San Diego. It’s also a dog-friendly beach, so you’ll find tons of furry friends soaking up the sun. From sunbathing, to surfing, to building sand castles on the beach, your family will have a great day on the beach.

Silver Strand State Beach, San Diego

Another popular beach in San Diego is Silver Strand State Beach, where you’ll find RV campers, picnic areas, sandy beaches, and tons of families. Kids will have a ton of fun splashing on the San Diego Bay side, Crown Cove, where the water is calmer. On the Pacific side, you’ll find surfing lessons and lots of waves to hang-ten.

Santa Monica Pier & Beach, Santa Monica

With sandy beaches and it’s signature pier featuring classic carnie rides, families will get a two-for-one-deal at the Santa Monica Pier and Beach. There are great snack shacks and trinket shops along the pier and there’s always tons of street entertainment. There’s also a great biking path for the family to enjoy after hanging out by the beach.
